Jayalalithaa, Venkaiah Naidu to open metro rail airport corridor

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety cleared the corridor in August and the state government has now decided to inaugurate the line on September 21.

Chennai: Services on Little Mount-Chennai airport metro corridor will be thrown open to the public on Wednesday by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

While Mr Venkaiah will flag off the train at the Airport Metro station at 11 am on Wednesday, Ms Jayalalithaa will join the event through video conferencing from the state secretariat, official sources said.

The 9-km long stretch connecting Little Mount with the domestic and international airports via Guindy and Alandur will bring a paradigm shift in the way Chennaiites travel. The entire corridor is elevated and commercial operations are likely to begin on Wednesday after the line is thrown open by the leaders.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety cleared the corridor in August and the state government has now decided to inaugurate the line on September 21.

Chennai Metro Rail Corporation is a joint venture company of the Union urban development ministry and Tamil Nadu Government.

As the 14-km Koyambedu to Alandur line is already operational, this 9 km stretch will connect commuters from CMBT to Chennai airport.

The airport station is a five-level terminal spread over 17,300 square meters that would provide seamless movement of commuters from the metro to the airport. The station has been constructed in such a way that it connects both the domestic and international terminals thrown open to the public a couple of years back.
