Chennai theatres under scanner for exorbitant ticket prices

The Control room (044-23452359) to prevent the collection of excessive money on theatre tickets was formed on the directives issued by the Madras HC.

Chennai: Complaints are made about exorbitant pricing of cinema tickets, theatres are inspected and reports are filed to the top brass of the city police. Nothing happens beyond that. The Control room (044-23452359) to prevent the collection of excessive money on theatre tickets was formed on the directives issued by the Madras High Court.

The committee, which comprises Commercial Tax Officer (CTO), Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and Entertainment Tax Officer (ETO), had carried out their investigation in all 57 complaints received in this regard.

On Tuesday, calls were received, on the collection of exorbitant ticket prices for Kabali at Raj theatre, Saidapet and Vettri theatre, Chromepet. Sources said a majority of the complaints received on ticket pricing were found to be true.
“Most of the theatres, which are alleged to have been collecting excessive fare, do not issue tickets for the minimum rates or the intermediary rates, as mandated by law,” said a senior police official. The same had been reported to the superior officers, on a daily basis. The city police top brass would refer it for legal action as per the law on the same.

G. Devaraj, whose petition to ban the release of Kabali was thrown out by Madras HC in this regard told DC that the movie will be released by the time any meaningful action was taken.
