Telangana: Tiger parks will stop issuing pictures

Some nature enthusiasts said poachers had other ways of locating animals.

HYDERABAD: Staff at the two major tiger reserves in the state welcomed the National Tiger Conservation Authority order prohibiting uploading of pictures of tigers on social media.

Mr C. Sarvanan, director of Kawal reserve, which has four tigers said, “Poachers take advantages of the photographers on social media. We used to release pictures taken on our monitoring cameras but that will come to an end.” Some nature enthusiasts said poachers had other ways of locating animals.

Mr Mohan Chandra Pargaien, field director of Amrabad reserve, home for 20 tigers, said. “Poachers can determine location coordinates using an uploaded picture. To be on the safe side, I think that this is a good step.”
