NGT ban on diesel vehicles impractical: A K Saseendran

Speaking to media persons, the minister said that the Kerala High Court's stay on the Green Tribunal's order was only temporary.

Thrissur: National Green Tribunal's ban on diesel vehicle is 'unscientific' and 'impractical' and the state government will move the Supreme Court against the order, said state transport minister A.K. Saseendran here on Sunday. Speaking to media persons, the minister said that the Kerala High Court's stay on the Green Tribunal's order was only temporary.

The Tribunal had banned light and heavy diesel vehicles that were more than 10 years old in six major cities in Kerala. It had also ordered to stop the registration of diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of 2000 CC or more, except public transport and local authority vehicles. The HC had stayed this ban.

"Such a ban needs to be implemented in a phased manner and not immediately. However, the government is liable to find a solution to the environmental and waste disposal issues mentioned by the Tribunal," the minister added.

Replying to a specific question, Mr Saseendran said that at present the government was not considering a hike in the bus fares. On the repairing and rescheduling issues faced by the low-floor buses operated by KSRTC, the minister said all issues would be solved soon.
