Women's Commission starts probe into atrocities

Ms. Sahu along with NWC counsellor Neha Mahajan Gupta is on a two-day visit to the state.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National Women's Commission member Sushma Sahu has lashed out at the state police saying that the commission had been kept in the dark on Action Taken Report on various cases related to atrocities against women. She said despite Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal writing to DGP T. P. Senkumar to know the status of the case
relating to Aparna Ramabhadran, one of the four Sports Authority of India (SAI) rowers who attempted suicide in Alappuzha last year, there was no action.

Ms. Sahu along with NWC counsellor Neha Mahajan Gupta is on a two-day visit to the state. They met DGP Senkumar and sought a detailed report on the cases of atrocities against women in the state. Ms. Sahu told DC that the state police had not taken the welfare of the women seriously.

She also alleged that the Kerala police had not informed the NWC of what they had done in a particular case as well as all the general cases against women.
“Unfortunately, Kerala police have never bothered to inform us about what action they have taken. Kerala is witnessing the maximum number of suicides. The actual reasons behind the increase in suicides should be probed. There is none to listen to the woes of women and all doors are being closed before them,” said Ms. Sahu who belongs to Bihar.

But Mr. Senkumar told DC that they had been providing a detailed report to NWC which has unfortunately been not received by them. She also said that the parents of the women SAI rowers who tried to commit suicide told her that it was due to the societal pressure that they decided to take drastic steps.

The women activists have asked the DGP that internal complaints committee has to be set up in private sector and should not wait until something happens.
They are expected to visit Ernakulam on Wednesday to probe the RLV Music College student's suicide bid and also the atrocities against tea estate women workers in Idukki.
