Chennai: Pillion riding girl run over by container, dead

Chennai: A 20-year-old college girl pillion riding on a bike died after she was thrown off from the two-wheeler when the bike rider applied the brake suddenly to attend a mobile call in Kasimedu on Saturday.

Supriya was thrown off and landed on the service road and came under the wheels of a container lorry and died.

The rider, Vimal, college mate of the deceased, escaped with a fracture on his hand. Vimal was riding the bike to drop Supriya at her home in Kasimedu at 3.50 pm.

When the duo reached Anna Nagar near Kasimedu, he received a call on his mobile phone. He applied sudden brakes and in the process the girl was thrown off and he lost control of the vehicle, a Yamaha FZ.

Vimal was not aware that his friend was thrown off and had come under the wheels of a container lorry until another motorist raised the alarm.

The container lorry driver stopped his vehicle only to find Supriya under the rear wheels, police said.

Based on an alert, Kasimedu traffic investigation police registered a case under IPC section 304 (a) (causing death due to negligence) against the rider. Though the police took the two to Tondiarpet government general hospital, Supriya was declared brought dead by the medical team there.
