MLAs moot facelift for GV Raja Sports School
Thiruvananthapuram: A legislative committee including five young MLAs has recommended a slew of infrastructural changes and new appointments at GV Raja Sports School based on feedback from students. Presently, there are only nine coaches deputed by the Sports Council to train around 400 students under various disciplines. The committee concluded that at least 20 coaches would be needed to run the institution. Further, when injuries incurred during sporting activities, there was no medical officer to help students.
“Students are rushed to either the Medical College or Aryanad Community Health Centre (CHC). So, we have recommended a Department of Sports Medicine with a doctor in the campus,” said Local MLA K Sabarinathan, who was also a committee member. The indoor stadium construction project in the campus is going on at a snail’s pace. The school lacks a synthetic track and at least five acres of land will be needed for the project. The committee has recommended acquiring land to complete the track.
The revenue department will study the feasibility. The students demanded a raise in mess fee allowance. They also reported a laxity in security as fencing around a part of the campus was recently removed. “Also the hostel has transparent windows which face the public road. The committee has directed that either curtains be draped or glasses changed,” he added.
