Green People on a mission to save Kuttampuzha river

A five-day nature camp for the over 100 youths including girls is being organised by the NGO.

Kochi: Muvattupuzha-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) ‘Green People’ has launched a mission to save Kuttampuzha river that flows through the eastern parts of Ernakulam district. The NGO has also roped in the services of the Kudumbasree units in the area and also of the social and political leaders who are joining in the mission to prevent encroachment on the river and its pollution.

A five-day nature camp for the over 100 youths including girls is being organised by the NGO to spread the message of keeping the river clean and free of plastic bottles and other non-biodegradable substances. “Tourists too throng the area including tribal settlements in Kuttampuzha and it is of utmost importance to educate the local people especially the students and youth about keeping the pristine beauty and quality of nature,” said Mr Aziz Kunnappilly, a leader of Green People.

He said that the polluting of Kuttampuzha river was threatening the water sources in Kothamanganalam also. “Forest fire is another issue that is ravaging the forest patch in the eastern area nowadays and the local population has to be taken into confidence to battle it. Nefarious elements who are behind these forest fires have to be tackled. Sadly the forest department is not taking any initiatives in this regard,” said Aziz Kunnappilly.
