A Make in India' initiative! Try this unique gas saving oven

Hegde feels each hotel can easily save Rs 600 a day by installing this oven.

Udupi: For those who are worried about excess use of cooking fuel, Vijay Kumar Hegde of Susi Global Research Centre has come up with an advanced gas saving oven! The invention was inaugurated by Congress leader Oscar Fernandes.

“Normally, while cooking, the flame touches the utensil to the tune of 35-40 per cent. The balance heat goes out with the air and is wasted. In our new invention we convert the waste flame to generate steam and this steam is used to prepare food items including rice, sambar, idli and as a spoon warmer and sterilizer. All this can be done at no extra cost,” said Hegde giving details about his invention.

He has worked on this for about a decade and has improvised the kit several times. In the advanced unit, Dosa-Chapathi Tawa, the steam boiler and oven can work at a time. “Usually hotels have gas stoves and also a separate boiler. But in our unit the boiler works on the waste flame. Thus the hotels need not waste fuel for a boiler,” Hegde who has applied for a patent for the project told DC.“This unit will save money for people who install it in hotels, hostels, temples and in catering units,” said Hegde. The project which has the features of the ‘Make in India’ dream of PM Modi also helps in decreasing carbon emission thereby protecting the environment and saving fuel.

Hegde feels each hotel can easily save Rs 600 a day by installing this oven. “Even if 7.5 lakh hotels in the country (though as per an estimate, there are about 30 lakh hotels) use this oven, there would be a saving of about Rs 16,000 crore pear year,” he claimed.

The unit has a built in boiler. If the gas burners are not in use, people can use the boiler separately.
