Agitators set Maharaja's College principal's chair on fire
Kochi: A section of students led by SFI activists at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, set the chair of principal Dr N.L. Beena on fire after marching to her chamber and dragging it on to the road in front of the college on Thursday noon in protest against what they alleged the moral policing of the principal on the campus. The principal was on leave. This is a sequel to the ongoing stand-off between SFI activists and the principal. SFI leaders said they had the backing of this teaching body in the protest against the principal. They said that the principal was not allowing girls and boys to walk together on the campus.
They also alleged that she was contemplating closing down college hostels. There is allegation that teachers were also involved in the incident. The CPM-controlled teachers’ body AKGCT had come out against the principal the other day for what they alleged irresponsible behavior and actions by the principal against the students. Another section of teachers held a march inside the college campus later, pledging support to the principal. The police which arrived at the spot after the incident, said they received no complaints.
