New life to Thalassery Heritage Circuit Tourism Project
THALASERRY: Thalassery Heritage Circuit Tourism Project, launched when Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was the tourism minister but halted due to many reasons, will be revived. The project mainly focuses on the preservation and conservation of various heritage sites and monuments situated in Thalassery, which once was the headquarters of British Raj in Malabar. A meeting Thalassery MLA A.N. Shamseer held recently had decided to add few more projects and submit a detailed project report to the state government.
Mr Shamseer said a living museum connecting the three Cs Thalassery is known for - cricket, cake and circus - will be part of it. “The heritage project once realised is going to change the face of the city. Thalassery has an important position in the history, and the scope of tourism potential is very huge," he told DC. "A tourist who visits Thalassery can see not just the remnants of the British colonialism, but few kilometres away they can also witness those from the former French colony Mahe.”
Six phases of the revived project cover Thalassery Pier, old warehouses, etc. besides a pilgrim tourism circuit covering Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswamy Temple, Jagannatha Temple, Kadirur Suryanarayanan Temple, Odathil Mosque and Anglican Church. Scopes for protecting the Gundert’s Bungalow with German co-operation will also be explored. An international biennale of martial arts including Kalaripayattu and a Kalari Museum are also on the plan. Thalassery Municipality is holding a series of programmes as part of the 150th anniversary of the civic body, one of the oldest established in India by the British.
