UDF ready for joint cooperative stir
Thiruvananthapuram/ Kollam: Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said the UDF was ready for a joint agitation with the LDF till December 31 against the Centre's move to destroy state's cooperative sector. The opposition would support every government move to protect the sector, he said. The opposition has already recommended suggestions to help people in difficulties due to the curbs imposed on district cooperative banks. These include convening a special Assembly session to discuss the sector's crisis and setting up a special control room at the secretariat to help the affected people.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Oommen Chandy said that the adverse effect of Centre's demonetisation would last for several years. "The move has burdened the public and the economy as a whole," Mr. Chandy said after inaugurating the delegate meeting of Building Construction Workers Congress (INTUC) at Chinnakkada in Kollam.
"The currency notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 which contribute to over 86% of total currency in the economy were withdrawn without any adequate preparations and hence the people struggle even after ten days of their withdrawal. Over 33% to 36% of hike in the number of these demonitised currencies was made after Narendra Modi came to power. The currency issue has affected workers the most. Situation has come to such a pass where people have neither jobs nor wages," Mr. Chandy said.
