Panel to probe CUIET campus clash

CUIET shut after students allegedly beat teacher on Thursday.

KOZHIKODE: Calicut University Vice Chancellor Dr K Mohammed Basheer has appointed a four-member committee to investigate the clashes that took place in the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (CUIET) on Thursday evening. The committee will visit the College campus and hold talks with students, teachers and the principal and submit a report to the VC for further action. The College has been shut down indefinitely after a group of students allegedly beat a teacher over an earlier verbal clash.

On Friday, the teachers staged a sit-in in front of the University Administrative Block and submitted a memorandum to the VC demanding action against those who had manhandled the teachers. “We received a positive reply from the VC who told us such issues would not be allowed in the campus. We hope to see an amicable solution,” said one of the teachers. According to sources, the issue started after Sunod Kumar, a teacher from the mechanical engineering department allegedly manhandled a student from another branch who came to his class to take a laptop from his friend. The teacher asked him to get out of the class as a presentation was going on but the student refused.

The resultant verbal clash led to students organised under the SFI protesting and demanding an apology from the teacher, but it was refused. The students allegedly threatened the teacher and the HOD while going to the canteen. The students also allegedly manhandled C Sunod Kumar, who was later admitted in the Tirurangadi Taluk Hospital. One of the teachers told DC that again they were threatened by a group of former students later outside the campus. After the teachers protested, the principal suspended three students of the seventh semester. No complaint has been made to the Police so far. The teachers made it clear that they would attend classes from Monday.
