New courses must meet market need

Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari held a meeting with vice-chancellors and registrars of universities.

HYDERABAD: The state government will initiate a slew of measures like a common legislation for all universities, common online test for PhD and PG admissions, and introducing CCTVs and biometric devices in the higher education sector. Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari held a meeting with vice-chancellors and registrars of universities, in which the TS Council of Higher Education and top government officials took part.

Mr Srihari was critical of the previous governments for ruining the education sector. Without allotting funds, varsities, PG, degree and intermediate colleges were inaugurated, he said. “The situation is so worrisome that Osmania University is facing financial difficulties to conduct its centenary fete,” he said.

Mr Srihari said all universities must be of international standard. For this, they have been told to prepare an action plan and set targets. He advised vice-chancellors not to introduce new courses without assessing job requirement in the market. The minister lashed out at hiring of contract staff by the previous governments. There were issues regarding their regularisation or removal, he said, adding that all vacancies in universities would be filled in phases.
