Rain havoc in Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: The district witnessed heavy rain continuously on the second day. The road at the seventh curve of Thamarasserry ghat was washed away in the evening on Monday. The traffic along the ghat road was completely blocked. KSRTC buses from Wayanad were diverted to Kozhikode through the Kuttiyadi route.
Though there was no casualties, people were put to trouble due to water-logged roads in many areas. Incidents of tree branches falling on houses and the collapse of compound walls were reported from rural areas. Water overflowed from the drainage onto major roads at Kozhikode Moffusil bus stand, Jaffer Khan colony and at the Sreekanteshwara temple. It has been alleged that the cleaning of the 24 drainages in the city was not completed and the clogged ones caused the problem.
Reacting to the rain havoc, the district administration opened 53 rain relief centres to shift those living in low lying areas. Kavilumparam, Maruthonkara, Vilangad, Chakkittappara, Koodaranji, Puthuppady, Kanthalad gram panchayats and Puthiyangadi in the Corporation limits were identified as trouble-prone. The relief centres will function under the direct supervision of the deputy tahasildar and village officer concerned. Of the relief centres, 7 are in Vadakara taluk, 6 in Koyilandy taluk, 18 in Kozhikode taluk and 20 in Thamarasserry taluk.
