Attappadi remains cut off from mainland

A total of six houses have been completely damaged in the district and 283 partially damaged.

Palakkad: Attappadi, Silent Valley and Nilgiri Hills remain isolated as heavy rains continue in the region. Places are cut off from the main land due to heavy landslides on the ghat road that connect the region to Palakkad and Manarcad In the Pudur panchayat in Attappadi region, as many as 80 tribal families are presently caught inside the forest and the rescuers could not reach them as they had to cross Varakar River at five different points. The river is presently overflowing.

The power blackout continued in Attapadi for the third consecutive day. According to additional district magistrate S. Vijayan, it would take nearly a week to clear the ghat road of the blockade. The only way now to reach Attapadi from Manarcad is a route via Coimbatore, a detour of 135 kilometers via Anaikkatti border.

The rain fury has claimed one life and injured five persons since last Saturday. At Kallamalla region in Attapadi, a seven-year-old girl, Aathira, died as she fell in the septic tank during the floods on Saturday. A total of six houses have been completely damaged in the district and 283 partially damaged. A total of 172 families have reached the four relief camps set up at Attappadi region.
