Kerala: 600 seats in self-financing medical colleges kept vacant

The final community list has to be published after the complaints are redressed.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) which published the second round of allotment for MBBS and BDS courses on Friday has kept vacant nearly 600 of the total 1400 seats for MBBS in self-financing medical colleges. Sources in CEE office told DC that the seats included those in MES Medical College Perinth-almanna, Malappuram and Dr Somervel Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakkonam.

The development has come despite as assertion by health minister K.K. Shylaja on Friday, hours before the allotment was to be published, that the two colleges will not be allowed to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement they had earlier signed with the state for a differential fee structure. The two colleges had on Wednesday said they would not withdraw from the agreement and that they had approached courts which would take up the case on August 21.

The CEE did not publish the list for Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode; Karuna College, Palakkad; Kannur Medical College and SUT Medical College, Thiruv-ananthapuram as they have not yet got approval for admissions from the Kerala University of Health Sciences. Allotments to community quota seats in medical colleges with minority status have also been held back as students have not been given time to submit their complaints about the community list published in the CEE website.

The final community list has to be published after the complaints are redressed. With the allotments to end after the second round, these seats will be filled through the spot admissions. However, the state government has approached the Supreme Court to allow it to conduct a third round of allotment. Candidates who receive allotment shall have to take a printout of their allotment memo and make online payment of the fee or balance fee payable to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations from Saturday to August 24.

State Bank of India account-holders can remit the fee in one of the designated branches through cheques. Allotments to other courses and colleges will be made later. Those getting a re-allotment to self-financing medical and dental colleges in the second phase, after having got an admission to other courses and colleges earlier, will be permitted to retain the first admission if they are unable to join the newly-allotted college of the second phase. However, the admission will not be retained if they obtained transfer certificate from the college/course from where they took admission based on previous allotment.
