Waste management: KSPCB pulls up BBMP

The KSPCB has suggested that the BBMP should segregate of household waste strictly as per its guidelines.

BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has criticised BBMP for not following the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules.

After concluding its verification of the aspects of solid waste management practices followed by the civic body, the KSPCB has observed inconsistencies regarding respect several aspects of solid waste management such as source segregation, waste transit points, open burning, poor maintenance of compacters, leading to discharge of leachate on road and other issues.

The KSPCB has suggested that the BBMP should segregate of household waste strictly as per its guidelines, which the Palike was not currently following. It wants more wards to be attached to the NGOs or be entrusted to some corporates as a part of their CSR activities, so as to achieve effective segregation at source.
