Malayalam University builds library in 60 days

The computerised library has a capacity to store 50,000 books and has a mini conference hall besides reading room.

MALAPPURAM: The new library and research block of the Malayalam University will be inaugurated by Education Minister C. Raveendranath on August 25. The two-storied building was built in 60 days with the cost-effective rapid building system of Australia using prefab wall panels. The construction of the 10,574 square-feet building was undertaken by the FACT-RCF Building Products Limited, a public sector company, at a cost Rs 1.78 crore.

The computerised library has a capacity to store 50,000 books and has a mini conference hall besides reading room. The top floor is meant for researchers. University students and the public will also be given restricted access to the library, said Vice-Chancellor K. Jayakumar. The research section has a digital library containing over 2000 out-of-print books and access point for e-books and e-journals.

“The panels used for the construction of the wall are made out of gypsum and high-strength glass fibre. These are strong as well as light and have wide acceptance. It has also been approved by the Building Material Promotion Council of India,” said Mr C.P. Dinesh, managing director of FACT-RCF Ltd.
