Chennai: Though slight drizzles welcomed the city on Tuesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that the rains, due to depression, are not significant.
However, a few parts of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu received good
rainfall. Valparai in Western Ghats topped the daily rainfall statistics by recording
27.2 mm on Tuesday. Ooty station recorded 5mm.
According to RMC officials, the isolated rainfall is under the influence of the Monday’s well marked low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh.
The low pressure concentrated into a depression on Tuesday over Northwest bay and adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha.
“Once the depression crosses the region, the rainfall will weaken in Tamil Nadu and pick up in Gujarat,” said a weather department official. However, after a brief lull, the monsoon activity will pick up in the state, forecast weather experts.
Meanwhile, the city will witness cloudy skies with the maximum temperature hovering around 36 degrees for the next few days.
On Tuesday, Chennai’s Nungambakkam station recorded 36.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.8 degrees less than the normal July temperature. Meenambakkam, on the other hand, noted 36.2 degrees, 0.8 degrees less than normal.
