Kozhikode traffic police act tough on violators

In one week, action taken against 40 who violated one-way traffic rules.

KOZHIKODE: The city traffic department has deployed a traffic police squad to act tough against violators of the one- way traffic rules. The squad was deployed a week ago and so far officials have taken action against more than 40 violators every day. The squads have been deployed mainly at five points in the city, namely, Nadakkavu junction, Mavoor road, Pushpa junction and the Commissioner’s office.

“We have directed the officials to slap a fine of Rs 500 for each violator. It has been noted that youngsters usually don't obey traffic rules. Many accidents have been reported especially during night hours when people violate traffic norms”, said Traffic official Yusuf N. Nearly five officials have been deployed in these spots to keep a check on violators. “The worst affected traffic spot is Nadakkavu Junction, where the officials have registered more cases of traffic violation”, said Nandakishore N, a tailor near Nadakkavu junction.

"In spite of heavy vehicles being directed to take a turn in front of the Nadakkavu Police station, no one is ready to follow the rules and go straight. The roads are already congested and these violations just make the situation worse,” he added. Violating a one-way posed a risk to other road users, especially when the designated roads were not wide, Mr Nandakishore added. “The Government must add more signboards in the city specifying one-ways and other traffic indications especially to the new drivers in the city”, he said.
