No drinking water shortage in summer: HMWSSB

HYDERABAD: With rumours' of the city not having enough supply to meet the drinking water needs doing the rounds, officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), on Wednesday, put paid to the fears.

They said that there are sufficient reserves to meet the summer requirements. Board officials cautioned people against getting carried away by fake news about insufficient water in the main reservoirs, Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam projects.

In a statement, the water board said that each day, 270 MGD of water is being utilised from Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir, Akkampally balancing reservoir through the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Phase - 1, 2, 3, totalling a supply of 1.38 TMC of water per month. As of Wednesday, the water storage capacity at Nagarjuna Sagar is at 157.61 TMC, 524.50 feet. On the same day last year, there were 188.95 TMCs, 540.30 feet of water, the board officials said.

Given that usually 25.941 TMCs of dead storage is there in the reservoir and 510 feet of water available for use, there will be no shortage of drinking water for the city this summer, they added.

Meanwhile, board officials are monitoring project conditions at regular intervals. They said that there will be no hindrance in supplying the 270 MGD of water that is required by the city. Officials from the water drainage department are ensuring supply of water till the end of August.
