Kozhikode: Waste continues to flow into sea
KOZHIKODE: Those who visit the city beach during these vacations will have to close their eyes and nose to avoid the filthy stinking waste water from the Government General Hospital at Beach that is being allowed to flow into the sea. Though there were protests by local residents, Greens as well as traders, no action has been taken. Despite many discussions, there have been no steps to set up a water treatment plant at the beach hospital. Corporation health standing committee chairperson KV Baburaj told DC that despite many warnings, the hospital authorities were yet to act.
It is a shame for the city, he said, adding that such blatant violation of pollution laws should not be allowed. Green Hope Society secretary KK Shaju told DC that it was sad that the government itself engaged in violating pollution norms. “While even small firms and business establishments install incinerators and water treatment plants, the government departments were being irresponsible”, he added. Beach hospital superintendent Dr Ummer Farooq told DC that moves were on to sort out the issue. A project was on the anvil to ensure sanitation of the hospital and the premises, he added.
