Kozhikode set to end traffic chaos

Corporation to unite departments to identify areas for improvement.

KOZHIKODE: The Corporation as well as the Traffic directorate will survey the important junctions that lead to traffic chaos on the city roads, including the highways and bypass junctions, before preparing a comprehensive plan in cooperation with other stakeholders including NATPAC and PWD. The first phase of the survey would be carried out on Saturday, said Mayor Thottathil Raveendran.

“There should be an end to the traffic chaos in the city. Someone has to take the initiative. The city is already facing issues from the residents and shopkeepers over widening of the roads and turning them into one-ways. At some point, for the development of the city, the public will have to compromise. Along with that, there should be coordination among the departments,” the mayor said. A meeting was convened on Tuesday between him and North zone traffic SP K.P. Philip.

Once the survey is conducted, the report with suggestions will be presented to Kozhikode MP and MLAs of Kozhikode North, South, Elathur and Beypore, said the Mayor. A detailed plan would be charted out after discussing the fund utilisation from the people’s representatives. More stress would be given to centralised parking and unauthorised parking would be curbed, said the SP. Once the survey works were over, all stakeholders including town planning department will be called for a discussion, he added.
