Bengaluru: For 120 seconds when the earth shook, gently

No Richter scale picked up the tremors, possibly because they were too mild.

Bengaluru: Not since 2012 has the city been this shaken up! But at precisely 7.35 am on Tuesday morning, residents of Kengeri and Rajarajesharinagar in the city, and further afield in Ramanagar, Nelamangala and even some villages in Mandya woke to mild tremors. Although barely felt for a couple of minutes, between 7.35 am and 7.37am, the tremors had many running out of their homes in panic.

No Richter scale picked up the tremors, possibly because they were too mild, said G S Srinivasa Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre. While there was no damage in the city, some houses and old buildings in Ramanagar and Nelamangala developed cracks.

"I noticed the window panes rattling and making a strange noise for a few seconds and ran out to check if there was an earthmover at work. But I saw nothing. My family too felt the shaking," said H. Joseph of Rajarajeshwarinagar.

"It was around 7.30 am when I felt my cot shaking as if someone was pushing it hard. Luckily it was only for a couple of seconds and no damage was done," said Milind Dharmasena of Kengeri, who quickly took to social media to post his experience and got a response from others, who had felt the tremor as well.

But none of the 15 Richter scales across the state recorded any seismic activity, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre noted.

"None of the five instruments in the Bengaluru region picked up any tremor either. This could be because it was about 1 or less on the Richter scale," Mr Reddy explained, recalling that no seismic activity was recorded when tremors were felt in Doddanahalli village in Ramanagar recently.

However, on April 2, the Richter scale had picked up tremors of 2 units magnitude in Hosadurga and Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, he added.
