KOCHI: An editorial in the Sathyadeepam, the official journal of the Ernakulam-Angamaly diocese has praised the clergy for showing courage to address the issue related to the controversial land deal in the Syro-Malabar church. The editorial in the issue dated January 17 pointed out that the confession of the Church leadership that it had erred in the land deal is a “positive thing”.
Terming the land deal controversy as a ‘gift’ from God during the jubilee year of the Church, the editorial said that the willingness to acknowledge a mistake will only enhance the prestige of the Church. The editorial also lauded the effort of the Church to constitute a panel of priests to probe the details of the deal and bring out the truth.
“Genuine confessions by Popes on mistakes have only helped in enhancing the prestige of the Church. The Church does comprise saints alone. It also has sinners who are striving to become saints and the world is aware of it through such confessions”, the editorial went on to say. The editorial has also pointed out that hushing up matters, even if unpleasant, is not suitable for the present times.
