Krishnagiri: Again, efforts to reunite jumbo calf with herd fail

The calf was saved from a well into which it had fallen while its herd crossed the farm land in Pavadarapatti village.

KRISHNAGIRI: A three-month old elephant calf is now in the care of the Forest department staffs after their efforts to reunite the wild animal with its family have failed.

On Thursday, the Krishnagiri forest staff went to U-Puram village following information about the jumbo calf that entered the village in the wee hours.

The female calf was identified as the one that was rescued on Tuesday. The calf was saved from a well into which it had fallen while its herd crossed the farm land in Pavadarapatti village, near Rayakottai of Krishnagiri district.

According to the Forest department staff, the baby elephant was taken inside the forest and released where a herd of pachyderm was spotted at the place close to a water hole. However, the calf returned to Pavadarapatti village on the same day night. Later, the Forest department staff tried to reunite the jumbo with another elephant group and this too proved futile because of it coming back to the U-Puram village.

Now, the calf stays in the anti-poaching camp in Udedurgam reserved forest close to U-Puram village and is being taken care of by the Forest department staff.

The wild animal will be hand raised till the department employees locate its family, sources said.
