Telugu states tremble under winter cold wave

The present temperatures were not because of the \'cold waves’, but the results of cold winds from the north

Visakhapatnam: Both the Telugu states are shivering under an extreme weather condition for the past few days when the lowest minimum temperature was recorded below 10 degrees Celsius.

Weather officials attributed this phenomenon to the presence of the cold winds coming from north and north-easterly parts of the country.

Six degree Celsius was registered at G. Madugula in Visakhapatnam agency, lowest in both Telugu states, while 8 degrees Celsius was registered at Komarambheem district in Telangana.

“Hyderabad city also registered a minimum temperature of 12 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours as on December 17. Hyderabad's record lowest minimum temperature for December was 7.5 degree Celsius on December 12 in 1970, and 6.1 degree Celsius on January 8 in 1945, overall,” IMD Hyderabad director Nagaratna told Deccan Chronicle.

He said the present temperatures were not because of the 'cold waves’, but the results of cold winds from the north.

“Hyderabad city may register 10-11 degrees Celsius any time before January 15, but may not go below 10 degrees Celsius this year,” Nagaratna said.

Overall, for Telangana, 3.5 degrees Celsius was the record lowest temperature registered at Adilabad on December 27 in 2017.

The AP weatherman said coastal areas like Visakhapatnam city may not see minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius but Visakhapatnam agency areas including Araku may receive lowest temperature at below five degree Celsius before Pongal.

Already, some areas in the agency received six degree Celsius close to five degrees Celsius. “Tourist spots like Lammasingi near Chintapalli in Visakhapatnam agency always registered below 5 degree Celsius in winter season. Sometimes, the temperatures will be zero here,” an IMD official told this newspaper.
