Three Cochin University of Science and Technology students suspended for ragging

The students owing allegiance to the SFI claimed that he was removed following their protests.

KOCHI: Three third semester marine engineering students of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) were suspended by Vice-Chancellor Dr J. Letha pending a detailed inquiry into the allegations that they had ragged a first semester student, Ashish Thampan from Kannur, who attempted suicide the other day. The suspended are Jibin K, Vishnu C.V. and Visakh V. The Kalamassery police has registered a case over the issue. However, a faculty member at the marine engineering department said that there was no substantial evidence about the ragging.

“The action has been taken pending a detailed inquiry as per procedure. There seems to be some other issues involving the students which may not be per se ragging,” the member added. Meanwhile, the Cusat syndicate which met on Saturday decided to change the chief warden of hostels, Mr Job Thomas, who has completed his three-year term, officials said. The students owing allegiance to the SFI claimed that he was removed following their protests. The seniormost assistant warden has been given charge now.

The syndicate also decided not to impose fine en masse on the inmates in case of damage to furniture and other items in hostels and instead decided to depute a syndicate panel to assess the same and take action. The syndicate also elected the standing committee chairpersons. Dr Chandramohan Kumar will head the finance standing committee and Mr R. Sasidharan the examinations standing committee. Mr N.V. Joshi is the new standing committee chairperson for
staff and establishment. Dr A.N. Balchand and Mr M. Swaraj MLA will head the academic and works standing committees respectively.
