Activist Detained Before her Major Disclosure Against Minister

Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Saturday detained activist Anjali Damania from Santacruz while she was heading to hold a press conference outside the residence of Sameer Bhujbal — nephew of Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Ms. Damania had announced that she would expose a big scam done by Chhagan Bhujbal. She was taken to Juhu police station before being released.

Ms. Damania, who was a member of Aam Aadmi Party in the past, has filed corruption cases against Chhagan Bhujbal. After the minister spearheaded an OBC agitation against Maratha quota demand, she alleged that Mr. Bhujbal’s speech on the quota issue was provocative and therefore she would make a “major disclosure” in front of Sameer Bhujbal’s house.

Accordingly, she proceeded towards Sameer’s house when the police apprehended her. She was accompanied by her supporters.

Ms. Damania was detained but she refused to sit in the police vehicle. She was later taken to Juhu police station before being released.

In 2012, Damania who was then part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court seeking an FIR against Bhujbal for financial misappropriation. Bhujbal was subsequently arrested in 2016. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering case against the NCP leader and he spent two years in jail before being released on bail in 2018.

On Friday, Mr. Bhujbal had warned the government against including all Marathas in the OBC category by issuing them Kunbi caste certificates. He said that if the Marathas are given reservation from the share of the OBCs, the government will face the consequences.
