Thanjavur, Aravakuruchi polls on November 19
Chennai: Elections to two Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies Thanjavur and Aravakuruchi, which were cancelled by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in May following evidence of money being used to influence voters, will now be held on November 19, ECI announced on Monday.
The Thiruparankundram seat in Madurai district, which became vacant on the demise of AIADMK MLA S. M. Seenivel, will undergo a bypoll on the same day.
The counting of votes for all the three seats will be on November 22, the ECI said. The notification will be issued on October 26 and elections will be held on November 19. With this, the model of code of conduct comes in to effect in three districts of Tamil Nadu including Karur, Thanjavur and Madurai districts.
Earlier, the ECI had on two occasions postponed polls to the Aravakurichi and Thanjavur seats following reports of large scale poll violations like distribution of cash, liquor and freebies to induce voters. Initially, the polls were postponed from May 16 to May 23. On May 21, the Commission again decided to postpone the polls to June 13. However the polls were later indefinitely put off with a notification on May 28.
