Farmers' associations reject report of high-level technical team
Chennai: Farmers in the Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu on Monday outright rejected the report submitted to the Supreme Court by a high-level technical team, terming it “one-sided” and “heavily tilted” towards Karnataka, which has been vehemently opposing constitution of Cauvery Management Board.
Members of various farmers’ associations based in the Delta region and elsewhere wanted the Supreme Court to "reject" the report of the high-level committee that visited the Cauvery Basin in Karnataka and the Cauvery Delta in Tamil Nadu early this month and stick to its earlier direction to the Union government on CMB.
“The report gives an impression that the situation in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is of the same proportion, which is not true. This report does not reflect the realities on the ground and it has downplayed the situation prevailing on the ground in TN. The Supreme Court should reject the report,” P. R. Pandian, President of Coordination Committee of All Farmers Associations, told DC.
Accusing the technical committee of falling prey to Karnataka's lies, Mr Pandian said "suicides that took place due to personal reasons" in Mandya and other districts of Karnataka have been linked to the prevailing situation. "The Committee has also given wrong facts about storage level in dams in Karnataka. And the suggestions given by them to Tamil Nadu farmers are impractical and not related to the subject that we are discussing now," Mr Pandian said.
Echoing Mr Pandian's views, Secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association P. Shanmugam said the SC should exert more pressure on the Union government.
