Soon, Amma marriage halls in Tamil Nadu

The halls will have facilities like air-conditioned rooms for the bride and the groom, guest rooms, dining hall and kitchen, she said.

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced construction of Amma marriage halls at 11 places in the state at an estimate of Rs 83 crore. The new air conditioned marriage halls will be a boon to middle-class and lower income groups and will bring down the marriage expenses, she said in a statement.

The halls will have facilities like air-conditioned rooms for the bride and the groom, guest rooms, dining hall and kitchen, she said.

Tamil Nadu Housing Board and cooperative societies have been directed to execute the scheme.

The halls will be built in Tondiarpet, Velachery, Ayapakkam, Periyar Nagar and Korattur in Chennai, Anna Nagar in Madurai, Ambasaudram in Tirunelveli, Salem, Kodungaiyur in Tiruvallur and Udumalaipet in Tirupur.

Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa also announced construction of 50,000 new houses through Slum Clearance Board at the cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The government will offer a subsidy of Rs 945 crore to beneficiaries to construct 45,000 houses. She also announced construction of 908 tenements for rental to state government employees and 1,266 for sale to public at Rs 401 crore.

Under the self-financing scheme, 873 tenements will be built in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli. Though there was no mention about whether the facilities will be provided free of cost, informed official sources said the new facilities are likely to be rented out at nominal rate and bookings can be made online.
