Traffic congestion chokes Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first day of Malayalam month of Chingam on Thursday has aggravated jams as the brisk shopping for marriages and house warming seasons has begun, said a senior traffic police officer. The commercial hubs of Thiruvananthapuram city and municipalities will have new traffic arrangements as jams were expected to rise manifold during Onam season. The traffic density was supposed to reach a climax at bottlenecks like Attakulangara, Choorkkattupalayam and Overbridge. A stricter one-way system will be implemented at Chalai market.
“Thoroughfare will be allowed only from East Fort to Killipalam through Chalai. The volume of vehicles entering Chalai from Karamana side is less,” he said.
“Maximum parking space will be made available at Putharikandam grounds though few fares are going to take up half the space.” The jams were expected to reach a climax during ‘Uthrada Pachil’ (Uthradom rush)
Like in previous years, on days until ‘Thiruvonam’, vehicles will not be allowed to enter Vellayambalam- LMS road in the evening, officials said. Parking will be allowed on public buildings premises. “There should be restrictions on temporary stalls beside Putharikandam. The present pedestrian density demands more space at East Fort. Hackers create hurdles and slow down pedestrian movement,” said A. Shahjahan, a trader at Chalai.
