Train heist: CB-CID officials on the trail of five men
Chennai: The CB-CID sleuths are tracking details of at least five persons, all from North Indian states, who had worked at various times in Salem in connection with the Rs 5.75 crore heist from cash wagon attached to Salem — Chennai Express on the night of August 8.
“We are not sure about their involvement. But we want to question them to make sure they are not involved. It is too early to believe that they did it. We hope to track them soon,” an officer said while refusing to disclose further details.
The robbers had made a hole on the roof of the wagon carrying Rs 342 crore cash loaded in Salem and took away Rs 5.75 crore. The consignment of soiled notes, collected from various banks, was being moved to RBI, Chennai, when it was stolen.
Currently being probed by the CB-CID, the case has been giving sleepless nights to the investigators as they have been struggling to get any solid clue. They have also been browsing through cell phone tower dump data from Salem to Egmore and as well as Chetpet yard looking for clues.
As of Wednesday, a CB-CID IG and two SPs are camping in Salem while another SP is conducting enquiries at Virudhachalam. The CB-CID detectives seem to have shifted their focus from Chetpet yard to Salem and its surroundings as the probe in city has failed to yield any solid clues. “A lot of people are being questioned. Every small piece of information is taken into account and verified,” noted an officer.
