Modi, KCR rakhis being overtaken by those influenced by social media
Hyderabad: This Raksha Bandhan, there are not that many rakhis with the faces of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Last year had seen an explosion of such rakhis being used by fans of both politicians.
This year though, they have been overtaken by quirky ones — such as ‘social media rakhis’ depicting Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. These rakhis, which are selling from Rs 60 to Rs 100 each, are made of plastic with the logo of these social media giants. They are also a big hit with those who met over the social networks.
Ms Sneha Shah of Ramkot, who was shopping at Begum Bazar, said, “I met my senior from school after 12 years through Facebook. During my school days I would always tie a Rakhi, but then we lost contact. I found this Facebook rakhi and thought it would be apt as we have now been reunited through the network.”
Other specialised rakhis this season are from the most common, colourful characters appearing on television and in comic books these days. Rakhis are carrying images of Chhota Bheem, Ganesha, Spider-Man, Hanuman, Bob the Builder, Batman. There are also Puzzle Playtime rakhis.
Meanwhile the “kundan” rakhis are still in demand with many showing an interest in then. Shopkeeper Mr Raj Kumar said surprisingly, more adults opted for these stone-studded or “kundan” rakhis, while children preferred ones featuring famous cartoon characters.
