Chennai: About 4,134 families who have been living on the banks of Adyar river and displaced during the December 2015 deluge have been resettled at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and Perumbakkam. The remaining families will be resettled shortly, according to minister for housing and urban development Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan.
Following instruction from Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to provide 25,000 tenements immediately at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, Perumbakkam, AIR Colony – Tiruvottiyur and Navalur in Kancheepuram district and Goodapakkam in Thiruvallur district, the government had constructed houses and resettled 4,134 families already. It was decided to livable houses to the affected and also to increase the flood carrying capacity of the rivers in Chennai.
The tenements have been constructed with plinth area up to 400 sq. Ft with multipurpose hall, bedroom , kitchen, bath and toilet. Provision of compact fluorescent lamps and electric fans were also provided.
The note also mentioned that a consultant has been appointed to explore the possibility of forming an elevated corridor to decongest the Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST) Road and the consultant has submitted its interim report which is under execution.
