Wandering oxen fill Kozhikode corporation coffers
KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on Monday auctioned off three oxen caught wandering on the city roads causing traffic congestion. The sale earned the corporation Rs 70,000 besides a fine of Rs 19,000 from owners. Corporation health officials said they would intensify the mission to capture the stray cattle. Health officer Dr R. S. Gopakumar said no owners would be allowed to take them back paying fine if there is no ownership certificate. The animals will be auctioned in 48 hours.
“On Monday, we sold three oxen whereas the fourth one was given to the owners after imposing a fine of Rs 8,000. Another Rs 11,000 fine has been imposed on the owners of a cow and few goats,” he told DC. During the last auction, it generated Rs 65,000 from three buffaloes caught from the railway track near Kallayi. The health officer said they would conduct a daily inspection to stop the menace.
