Congress invites Sugathakumari ire on loss of ideals
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poet Sugathakumari has come down heavily on Congress leaders dumping Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. Inaugurating KPCC's Janasadassu at Indira Bhavan against the government's liquor policy, she said the LDF had made the alcohol readily available. Trouble started when they chose a silent prayer to Vande Mataram. She lamented that they conveniently forgot India’s and Congress’s history.
She said she was speaking as the daughter of freedom fighter Bodheswaran. The downfall of the Congress started the moment its leaders decided to place Gandhiji on the walls and not their minds. “How many of you can go on fast until the end? Has anyone here in this hall seen the misery created by an alcoholic to his family members? No, you have heard from others. But I have seen their grief, from the homeless people at Abhaya,” she said. DCC president Neyyattinkara Sanal lamented inadequate representation at the meetings he calls, and the Janasadassu was no different, though called by KPCC president M. M. Hassan.
Initially, the meeting was supposed to be held at its Rajiv Gandhi Auditorium. But when there were hardly 70 leaders to attend, Mr Hassan had to shift the venue to the media room. A prominent MLA told DC that this was the case of a majority of its meetings. “Mr Hassan is organising several protest meetings against the wrong LDF policies, without the desired outcome. They turn just smoke screens,” he said.
