148 colleges get under 20 students for engineering seats in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: With just four more days left in the general counselling for engineering admissions, as many as 148 engineering colleges in the state have got less than 20 students each enrolling for B.E. and B.Tech courses this year.
Private engineering colleges have more than 1.18 lakh seats vacant as only 65,989 students have been allotted engineering seats so far. The general counselling began on June 27.
Totally 525 engineering colleges take part in the single window counselling for engineering courses conducted by Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions committee in Anna University's Guindy campus. The counselling will conclude on July 21.
"Of 525 engineering colleges, 148 engineering colleges have failed to attract students as they got poor enrolment this year," said Jayaprakash A.Gandhi, career consultant.
"These colleges are spread throughout the state. Even in Coimbatore region, many colleges did not enjoy good enrolment. Even the university constituent colleges are finding it difficult to fill their seats this time as these colleges do not have impressive placement records," he said. There are 1,304 seats are still vacant in the university's constituent colleges.
"There is an increased awareness among the parents about the infrastructure and faculties available in the engineering colleges. Clearly, students have ignored the colleges which are lacking in facilities," a private engineering college principal said.
"Students are also seeking advice from the senior students who are studying there before choosing a particular college. Those colleges with good infrastructure have got more students this time," he added.
But the top colleges like PSG College of Technology (autonomous) in Coimbatore and SSN College of Engineering in Thiruporur got filled within a day or two. Even the new college in PSG group - PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research - got all the seats filled this year.
R. Rudramoorthy. Principal, PSG College of Technology (Autonomous) said, "We are attracting the top students as we are able to get good placements for our students. Jobs are more important. Even in our new college, we demonstrated that we have got good infrastructure and faculty. In last year exams, PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research got the top place with good academic performance."
