Chennai: Couple arrested for cheating man of Rs 7 lakh
Chennai: A 26-year-old woman and her husband were arrested by the city police on Saturday for using pictures of a woman without her knowledge and usurping Rs 7 lakh from a man in the pretext of marrying him.
Yasmin (26) and her husband, Ibrahim (30) of Royapettah had used the pictures of her one-time neighbour Revathy (24) in Whatsapp to chat with another male friend, T. Dayandidhi (30) of Triplicane who was looking for a wedding alliance and usurped '7 lakh from him.
Yasmin had told Dayanidhi that a friend of hers, Priya is also seeking alliance for a wedding. “She told him that her friend is from a poor family and she needs '1 lakh and the man consented,” a police officer said. Dayanidhi was a small time trader in Triplicane.
Before even introducing the woman to him, Yasmin took another Rs 3 lakh from him, this time citing ill health of Priya’s mother. As time passed, Dayanidhi insisted that Yasmin introduce her to Priya or return the money. Yasmin devised a plan. “She took her mother-in-law’s phone and replaced her neighbour, Revathy’s picture as a display picture and begun chatting with Dayanidhi,” according to a police officer.
Yasmin took another Rs 3 lakh from Dayanidhi after this. However, the man posed questions as no arrangements were made to meet his prospective alliance.
When he demanded the money back, Yasmin gave him a cheque of Rs 7 lakh signed under the name Priya. “Yasmin had stolen Revathy’s chequebook when she was invited for a birthday party at the latter’s house,” police said.
The cheque didn’t go through and the man found that the account belonged to one Revathy. He managed to track down Revathy and told her how he was duped using her pictures. Revathy filed a complaint with the Royapettah police following which Yasmin and her husband were arrested.
