'Operation Idiminnal' for safety of women

Aims to keep anti-socials, eve teasers at bay

KOZHIKODE: To put an end to the worries of the women passengers who complain of the voyeuristic and physically-abusing perverts and to ensure safe travelling for the students, the police department, in cooperation with the district administration kick-started ‘Operation Idiminnal’ on Friday. The special shadow police team will be functioning as part of the Police Vanitha cell and directly under City Police Commissioner Uma Behra, said Kasaba CI P Pramod.

There are 18 members in the team including 13 female constables and a woman inspector (from the Vanitha Cell). The aim and duty of the special team is to protect the public from anti-social elements and to give protection to the college students from eve-teasing. Nine CCTV cameras were installed at mofusil bus stand on Friday and and 13 women police deployed on mufti.

The team has been split into groups to concentrate on malls, theatres, beach, parks, railway station, bus stands and on the premises of the schools and colleges on peak hours. Special ID cards are issued to them to be kept during duty time. The woman police officers are selected from six circles and the men are from AR camp. Their duty time starts at 8.30am and ends at 7pm.

The special areas covered by the ‘Idiminnal’ team are: students riding motorcycle in triples, students waiting for free lift on bikes, students in queue in theatres, students having more pairs of dresses in their bags, students wandering in street, beach and mall during school time, shops that helps change uniforms, shops that sell tobacco products to students, evacuating the tobacco sellers from the premises of schools and identifying shops that help students keep their mobile phones.
