Living conditions at labour camps alarming, says Kerala High Court
Kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday orally observed that the unhygienic living conditions at labour camps in the state was alarming. The court also observed that the pathetic conditions could be a reason for the rise in criminal tendencies among the labourers.
The court was considering a petition filed by M. A. Jose of Kochi who submitted that a labour camp at Ambalamukal, Ernakulam, lacked even basic facilities like toilet. The inmates of the camp were using makeshift toilets, the petitioner argued.
The court asked the district collector close down the labour camp in two days after considering the report of the advocate commission appointed by the court. It also asked the district authorities to take effective steps to rehabilitate the labourers. The expense for shifting them can be exacted from the person who provided accommodation to them, it said.
