Canals to be reopened on June 1

Due to delaying of Kharif, every year, commercial crops are damaged during the October and November months that are prone to cyclones

KAKINADA: Roads and Building Minister Dadisetty Ramalingeswara said on Tuesday that the canals would be reopened from June 1 to ensure early crop during the Kharif season.

“Due to delaying of Khariff, every year, the agriculture and commercial crops are getting damaged during the October and November months that are prone to cyclones,” he said.

He said that to avoid such harm, chief minister Jagan has given clear instructions to the officials to help start the agriculture operations from June 1.

Speaking at the irrigation advisory board and agriculture advisory board meetings here, he said this will also lead to a third crop, or cultivation of an alternative crop. Seeds, pesticides and fertilizers are being supplied to farmers through Rythu Bharosa Kendras, which were found ideal for other states as well.

Irrigation superintendent engineer Rambabu said 2.93 acres of land would be cultivated under the major irrigation system, 21,905 acres under medium irrigation system and 52,545 acres under small scale irrigation system. Irrigated water would be distributed through Yeleru reservoir and other medium irrigation projects.
