Kozhikode: The school kids here had a great time during the workshop on computer programming organised by the Kerala Startup Mission, Kozhikode.
The children aged between nine and 14 years and studying in classes from standards 5 to 10 in the schools here attended the workshop on "Introduction to programming using scratch and processing" held in cooperation with the Tinker Hub on Monday and Tuesday.
Praveen Sridhar, an expert in machine learning and currently working with Datalog.ai along with Vinayan, a hardware hacker based in Kochi, handled the sessions. Praveen is also the co-founder of TinkerHub along with Moosa Mehar.
P.K. Aisha, a 9th standard student, said that she realised the power of programming and wanted to develop games after the workshop. "Initially I was not keen, but was pushed by my parents to attend the workshop. I want to learn more about mobile apps," she added.
Kriti, a student of class 7, loves practical computer classes in school, but hated the theory classes. She could solve the Maze challenge during the workshop by taking hints and clues about the logic from the instructors. She now wants to learn the internal workings of computer science.
Vinayan, being a student, was able to buddy up with the kids and said that teaching must involve an element of play.
Moosa Mehar, co-founder of TinkerHub, said, "the students enthusiastically completed the programming challenges thrown at them. They learnt the basics of programming logic that is used to do animations and simple games using processing and MIT's scratch programming languages, Moosa said.
