Operation Anantha measures put to test

No water-logging was experienced at flood-prone Thampanoor and the central bus stand here.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The flood mitigation measures under Operation Anantha were put to test for the first time as Thiruvanantha- puram city received 66.8 mm rainfall on Tuesday. No water-logging was experienced at flood-prone Thampanoor and the central bus stand here. Amayizhanjan canal that passes beneath the railway station sucked in maximum water due to the recent cleaning works undertaken.

On the other hand, SS Kovil Road experienced water-logging and the Central Theatre road was inundated for a few hours. The water on Pazhavangadi canal receded without causing flooding though water in the canal was at least 2.5 feet higher than road level. However it did not breach the side walls of the canal and inundate the Pazhavagandi - Thakaraparambu road.

Water-logging was experienced on the stretch where Sreevarahom road intersects with Kaithamukku-Pettah road beside the railway lines. From there, the flow from Uppidamoodu until Kannamoola bridge was swift. However, plastic waste accumulation near Chennilodu caused water-logging in the area.

Further, as the newly-levelled wetland beside canal near Anayara was flooded and the canal swelled onto the coconut grove beyond KIMS hospital before it opened into Akkulam lake. Elsewhere, on Killipalam- Attakulangara bypass there was no water-logging. However, water receded slowly at Kuryathi road, Kaveri Gardens and Beverages outlet road.
