Heavy rains, high waves hit Kerala

Around four relief camps were opened to accommodate around 149 faimilies at Alappuzha.

Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha: The revenue officials and disaster management teams were put on high alert and relief camps had to be opened due to heavy rains and high waves at Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha on Tuesday.

Around four relief camps were opened to accommodate around 149 faimilies at Alappuzha, with two at Ambalapuzha talk and two at Cherthala due to tidal surge.
Similarly, a relief camp was opened at Valiyathura where 24 people were housed due to tidal surge that damaged around 50 houses and totally destroyed four. Around '50 lakh each was provided to all districts in state and officials have been asked to maintain high alert.

Two houses were destroyed at Ottur village at Varkala and three houses were destroyed at Navayikulam. Water logging was experienced at Chirayankeezhu and six houses were submerged at Vettoor. Around 14 rain havoc cases were reported in Kattakada taluk and certain areas at Neyyatinkara also were under water, revenue officials from Thiruvananthapuram said.

Thiruvananthapuram received a rainfall of upto 66.8 mm of rains whereas Alappuzha district received around 12.2 mm rainfall. Severe water logging and damages were experienced in low lying areas in Thiruvananthapuram city also.

Water swelled on the bank of Kariyil thodu inundating Kamaleswaram and Ambalathara in city where normal life was affected until around 11 am. Officials under Chief Secretary and additional chief secretary of revenue and disaster management reviewed the situation in state at aroound 10.30 am from their control room, officials said.

Torrential rain disrupted normal life in the coastal belt of Alappuzha district. About 10 houses were completely damaged in Purakkad panchayat due to rain.
Low lying areas in Alappuzha municipality, Kainakari, Kavalam, Edathua, Veyapuram, were inundated in water. Traffic through Alappuzha- Changanassery (AC) road disrupted partially due to the water logging.

Sea erosion was reported in various coastal areas in the district. Chennaveli, Chally, Arthunkal, Punnapara, Purakkad, Ambalappuzha, Koman, Thottapally, Thrikunnapuzha and other areas in the coast witnessed sea erosion. Ambalappuzha MLA G Sudhakaran demanded immediate relief for the people who lost shelters. He alleged that the district administration had not come up with any support for people so far.
