Kerala: Trauma care centres at medical college hospitals to get facelift

During her recent visit to Delhi, health minister K.K. Shailaja had requested expert help redesign the facilities in Kerala.

THIRUVANANTHPAURAM: The trauma care centres in medical college hospitals and district hospitals across the state would be redesigned and modernised to provide highest level of facilities to trauma patients. Experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ will help the state to redesign and modernise these centres. AIIMS runs one of the best trauma care centres in the country. During her recent visit to Delhi, health minister K.K. Shailaja had visited AIIMS Trauma Centre and requested the experts there to visit the state and help redesign the facilities in Kerala.

AIIMS casualty medicine department head Dr Sanjiv Bohoi and assistant professor Dr Tej Prakash Sinha visited the trauma care centre at the medical college hospital which will be the first to be redesigned and modernised. The experts inspected the facilities. The project is part of sustainable development plan being implemented in the health sector. Besides making a new trauma centre functional, the expert team will also provide suggestions to improve the existing facilities. The doctors shared their experiences at AIIMS with the staff here and explained the system of ensuring quality critical care without any delay. As part of the modernisation plan, state of the art equipment, ventilators, resuscitation facilities and adequate space for treatment would be put in place at the trauma centres.

The trauma centres will be divided into three zones; red, yellow and green. The red zone will be earmarked for critical care, yellow for intensive car and green zone for treating patients with minor injuries. The distance between beds, space for doctors, junior doctors, nurses, para medical staff would be earmarked clearly. Overhead IV fluid sets, resuscitation equipment would be installed to avoid crowding of the area with different kinds of stands. Special care will taken of the relatives and attendants who accompany trauma patients to reduce their anxiety and tension. Big digital display screens would be placed outside the waiting areas to provide details of the patient’s condition at regular interval.
