From Malappuram to Parliament: P K Kunhalikutty

Mr Kunhalikutty is the first contestant who won votes above five lakhs in the history of Lok Sabha elections in the state.

MALAPPURAM: Indian Union Muslim League national general secretary P.K Kunhalikutty, 67, is set to swear in as a member of the Lok Sabha for the first time during his nearly four decades of parliamentary political career with a record number of votes. Mr Kunhalikutty is the first contestant who won votes above five lakhs in the history of Lok Sabha elections in the state. Mr Kunhalikutty’s electoral politics started with his elction to the Malappuram Municipal council in 1979; and the young councilor aged 29 was also chosen as the chairman, the youngest one at that.

Two years later, he was elected to the state from Malappuram constituency which he represented twice. Then he moved to Kuttippuram in 1991 where he won three times and finally lost in 2006 to his former party colleague and close associate K.T Jaleel, now a minister in the ruling LDF government. This was the only election defeat he faced during his political career. He was an integral part of the cabinet of all the UDF governments in the state from 1991. His entrance to the national politics also coincides with his election to parliament.
