Ministerial panel reviews Ambedkar Smritivanam status

VIJAYAWADA: Ambedkar Statue Construction Ministerial Committee met here on Friday to take stock of the ongoing works at the Ambedkar Smritivanam, including construction of the 125 feet tall statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Architect of the Indian Constitution.

Ministers on the committee Merugu Nagarjuna, Kottu Satyanarayana, Botsa Satyanarayana and Adimulapu Suresh instructed officials to speed up works on the 125-feet-tall Ambedkar Statue being erected within the Ambedkar Memorial Park at Swarajya Maidan in Vijayawada.

Nagarjuna said apart from quickly assembling the statue, officials must ensure that a building too is built near the statue’s feet with a photo gallery, sculptures related to Ambedkar’s life and a library. He wanted facilities provided for visitors too.

Nagarjuna recalled Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s suggestion that a mini-theatre be set up in the premises of Ambedkar Smritivanam to show films related to Ambedkar and other freedom fighters.

The ministers asked officials to work in coordination and ensure that Ambedkar Smritivanam comes up as envisaged as a great monument.

They inspected works at the statue, pedestal, convention centre and retaining walls and made several suggestions.

Principal secretary Y. Sreelakshmi and social welfare secretary Jayalakshmi Ambedkar explained to ministers the progress related to works at the Smritivanam.
